The design concept for this mid-century modern renovation was "from the wooded hills to the sound" which resulted in removing all the existing lawn and replacing it with a terraced garden and path that carried the viewer past four splashing fountains down to a new ipe deck and paved garden entrance for the new front door.
For the rear yard, a dated and ugly concrete block retaining wall was replaced with a natural basalt rockery, layered planting, lighting and cable railing, and a custom spun brass basin to catch the rain which could also be used for a low firepit.  The shoreline ribbon was extended visually by matching materials with that of neighboring properties, creating the illusion of a long and seamless shore edge.

The design focus for this property was creating a more interesting park-like entry, through the use of wider spaces, a natural stone retaining wall with inviting seatrock, and a scrim of Japanese maples at the beginning of the path.  The street was screened with a middle layer of shrubs and trees, resulting in depth and privacy for the homeowner.

Irrigation and path lighting also contributed to the garden experience.
